The Journey of Fengqing Dianhong

The Five-Star strength of Fengqing Dianhong was not built overnight.

1938

Mr. Feng Shaoqiu, a famous tea master discovered that the fresh leaves of large-leaf tea trees in Fengqing (then called Shunning) is rich in inner substances, and completed the trial production of black tea. The first batch of samples earned praise in Hong Kong as "supreme among black teas" and was acclaimed by London tea tasters for combining the exquisite aroma of Keemun black tea with the vibrant color of Indian and Sri Lankan black teas.

1939

Shunning Experimental Tea Factory was established, marking the official birth of Dianhong.

1958

In 1958, Dianhong was sold in international market at high price.

2014

The processing technique of Dianhong was inscribed into the fourth batch of the National Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

2022

"Traditional tea processing techniques and associated social practices in China" were inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. As one of the 44 sub-items, the processing technique of Dianhong was included, marking the first-ever World Intangible Cultural Heritage achievement for Lincang.

The "Origin Code" Behind the Five-Star Distinction

Situated along the golden tea belt at 24°N, Fengqing sits at the very heart of the world’s origin of tea trees. The county boasts a total of 516,000 mu of tea gardens, situated at altitudes ranging from 1,600 to 2,200 meters, with an average annual temperature of 16–17°C, soil pH between 4.8 and 5.6, and red soil rich in potassium. The tea polyphenols content of the Fengqing large-leaf tea variety reaches 35.79%, while its water-soluble extract stands at 47.56%—both significantly higher than those found in small-medium leaf tea.

"Exquisite Shape, Vibrant Color, Intense Aroma, and Rich Flavor"—these distinct features of Fengqing Dianhong are born of the sunlight at 24°N, the daily temperature swings across 1,600-meter high-mountain, the nutrient profile of red soil with a pH of 4.8, and the molecular code etched in the genes of the large-leaf tea plant millions-year of evolution. A land beyond copy.
